To My Team - Happy Turkey Day
To the Designing Digitally Inc. team (Nick, Abby, Brian, Tim, Brittany, Eric, Mark, Alex, Matyas, Daniel, Greg, Martha, Mike): In addition to spending time with my family, Thanksgiving provides me a moment to reflect on the time spent with my colleagues at work. As we prepare to join our families and friends for a day of thanks and sharing, I want to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to each of you for the boundless energy, creativity, and professionalism you bring to Designing Digitally Inc. I am very thankful for that, and together we have created state of the art programs and designs that have pushed the boundaries of new technologies. I am most thankful to you all because I know in my heart that the next client that walks through our door will be provided the dedication and work ethic above and beyond any other company I have been a part of. I am most amazed by how each team member is dedicated to making sure that not one of our clients signs off on a project without a smile on their face. I just wanted to express my gratitude and I wish all of you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Andrew M Hughes President / Trash Collector (Thursdays Only) Designing Digitally Inc.
Sneak Peak of Java VE!
So we thought since the holiday break is coming up and everyone is excited to see our java based VE platform we would go ahead and take a screen shot for all of you to see! This VE is being used via the dark-star server and other components made to interconnect so that we can provide our clients with a URL to their virtual office that they can pass out , allowing their employees to log-in and share apps, talk to each other, exchange files, etc. We are excited as this will really help us to work with those who are hesitant to implement a VE due to security reasons. Take a look at the screen shot below. Just as we showed with the other VE sim we have been doing R&D to the server which is on the left and the client is on the right. As you can see the client is running via JAVA (look at the icon on the program). Do you like my green hair?
The solution to all VE security issues? (IT admins will love us!)
We are proud to announce that Designing Digitally Inc. has collaborated with other organizations to come up with a way which we can solve the virtual environment dilemma we continue to face. After almost each presentation we find that the feedback is in regards to installing a client side of the VE, and about security issues with opening up security ports potentially making organizations vulnerable to attacks on their internal network. Designing Digitally Inc. is now using Java technology to build a complex VE for corporations and institutions to use via a web browser such as IE and Firefox. So if you are connecting to a publicly available world hosted over the Internet, you do not need to explicitly download the client software. What our team will be doing is building the entire system and then will publish a URL; simply point your web browser to that URL and the client software will download automatically and will be cached on your client for future use. How cool is that? Future of VE's here we come! For more information on how we can use this system to your advantage contact us today! Keep your eyes out for screen shots coming soon!

We built it! A Virtual Environment for your intranet! The server is inside your network. Did I mention it is cross platform?
Great news everyone! Here at Designing Digitally Inc. we have solved the biggest issue we have faced with many of our VE clients. One of the biggest problems is security. Many corporations do not want to open ports for security reasons in order to connect with the worlds currently made out there. Most educational institutions have liability issues due to students having access to other people in world and they cannot determine who exactly is behind that avatar.
Therefore our talented crew has been diligently working on a VE that will allow our clients to install the server side software on their internal server allowing them to keep the entire VE inside their firewalled network. This revolution will allow for private corporate and educational meetings without having to deal with the issues inside Second Life, and Activeworlds. It also gives full control to the client for the system by having it installed directly into their network. Did I mention it is cross platform?
On the left you will find the server and on the right you find our client connected to the server! See below:
Why we love what we do…
Below is a message we received from a client this week. We love feedback (good or bad--but of course, we strive for good!) and it is comments like these that remind us why we do what we do everyday...and love doing it!
"First of all I want to say that my expectations have been exceeded 200%. What you guys have done here is simply amazing. The look and feel of our new island is exactly what we were looking for and then some. I'd like to thank you for your communication, professionalism and quality of work. You've made me look good, and I didn't do anything but give you a 30,000 foot view of what we wanted and you guys made it happen."
Yes, We Are Hard at Work in Second Life!
We know some of you must be asking "Hey Designing Digitally, whats up with your Second Life projects?!" Well for all of you out there, we want to show you a few pictures of the concepts we are working on for a project (we'll just call CCC):
First some walkway concepts:

Here are a few of the awesome building concepts:

Pretty sweet huh?
Now I can't give to much info about the buildings but I will say one is an info building, and one is a museum, you can probably guess which ones is which :o)
You may also be pleased to hear our golf course project is in the final stages, just need approval from the client and we will be getting that island opened up. Keep an eye out next week for some pics and more info on the project!
High End Avatar Preview
We are proud to give you guys a sneak peak of another top secret project. Our client allowed us to put some of the avatar development work we have been developing for all of you to see! The avatar below has been named Tim. No, these are not in Second Life avatars, nor are they being used in that way. These are for a 3D animation for a client. Not bad for a computer rendering huh ladies?
Here is a ROUGH version of the talking animation.
Granted this is just a quick rapid prototype so we already know that the mouth is not exact...
That is why it is called a rapid prototype. lol
We are building another Content Management System.
We are proud to announce that due to the hard work and excellent proposal writing of our team we have won a project to build a custom CMS system for a government organization! We are very excited to be able to have the privilege of developing this complex system. The sad part for those of you that read this blog is that we cannot disclose any specific information about it. But what I can tell you is that we are excited to develop this custom content management system due to it's ability to push the boundaries of how we use these systems currently. Although we can't give you much info, all of us here in the office are excited and we just wanted to share with someone....and well our blog takes the punishment this time! LOL!
Second Life Lives On!
Every once in awhile we see blog posts and newspaper clippings talking about Second Life in a negative fashion. Granted, SL does have it's flaws that we endure every once in awhile. But honestly this virtual environment can be used to have distant meetings, digital conferences, collaboration for educational or institutional purposes, social networking, interactive instruction / training, gaming simulations & experiences, and much more! Now we all have heard about the mass amount of X-rated in the realm of SL, however isn't this material all over the web? I can't help but accidentally type in a major websites address to land on an XXX website. So for those out there that have so much resistance to the web being in a 3d realm please understand that the children that are about to be born will grow up using these new forms of social networking only pushing us closer to this type of standardization of interactions. With all that said I wanted to share with you an article we found today regarding the A-list companies coming back to Second Life as they have learned that just like any other marketing initiative there has to be planning and integration into the existing marketing efforts for Second Life to successfully work. I have to say that we have worked with many organizations and find that the ones that understand how important having integration of the current marketing efforts in collaboration with this new initiative will lead to a great success. But for those that have the "field of dreams" mentality that if you build it they will come you will find yourself with a digital ghost town. Article: http://www.suntimes.com/technology/guy/1241998,CST-FIN-ecol26.article I want all of you out there that are interested in this new form of marketing to know that we are here through each step of the way to ensure that your strategy will provide you with the outcomes you desire.
