Teaching students how to build airplanes, robots and simulations is serious business, but Designing Digitally, Inc. plans to make it a game -- literally.
Designing Digitally, Inc., the web-based training firm that specializes in E-learning, virtual worlds, and 3D simulations, was recently awarded a 2011 Air Force Virtual World contract from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory located in Dayton, Ohio. This means the simulation experts at Designing Digitally, Inc. will dedicate the next year to creating an OpenSim virtual world grid, called Virtual Discovery Lab (ViDL), in which high school and college students can explore these technical topics in a hands-on, educational environment.
"We are extremely honored to have been selected for this contract," said Andrew Hughes, President of Designing Digitally, Inc. "It is going to be a fantastic and rewarding challenge to create the OpenSim virtual world infrastructure for United States Air Force Research Laboratory's Discovery Lab."
The contract award not only calls for Designing Digitally, Inc. to help create the Virtual Discovery Lab OpenSim virtual world grid, but also to work hands-on with students interested in the field over the summer at WPAFB Tec^Edge office. Students in the program are able to explore a number of areas of interest in an educational, hands-on setting that is challenging and fun.
With the Air Force Research Laboratory mission in mind, the agency often partners with educational institutions to make sure up-and-coming engineers, mathematicians, scientists and others receive cutting edge learning experiences. AFRL is a proponent of the STEM initiative.
STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, is an educational initiative dedicated to helping high school and college students prepare for the workforce and the post-secondary educational system. STEM education is designed to knock down barriers to learning by integrating the four distinct subjects into one for teaching and learning. The idea is to allow students to explore math and science in a more interactive, hands-on manner so they can develop critical thinking skills to solve problems.
The ViDL OpenSim virtual world infrastructure being designed and built by Designing Digitally, Inc. will be used to hold 1,000 students in the summer of 2011 for the Summer at the Edge (SATE) program at the Discovery Lab which is housed in the Tec^Edge. This Tec^Edge center was created as a partnership between the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Wright Brothers Institute. It is meant to better facilitate educational and research partnerships between industry, government and academia. Dr. Rob Williams, research director for the Discovery Lab at Tec^Edge and the creator of the 1,000 student Virtual Discovery Lab concept, is responsible for running the Summer-at-the-Edge (SATE) program where students are able to work side-by-side with industry professionals both physically and virtually through OpenSim. The goal of the SATE program is to accelerate technology innovations important to Department of Defense and to grow future technology leaders.
Along with hosting the OpenSim virtual world Designing Digitally, Inc.'s development team will be mentoring the Summer at the Edge (SATE) students in building the content within the OpenSim virtual world.

Designing Digitally, Inc. was contracted by the State of Vermont to develop an innovative web-based training tool for the Vermont DMV named DriveVermont. This free interactive program has been designed to help residents of Vermont learn to drive safely. The user friendly system was developed using a multitude of applications and mediums to form a visually appealing and interactive solution that helps potential drivers learn the rules of the road in Vermont.
The specifications for the project included accessibility features, as well as the ability for users with low bandwidth or lower end computer systems to access the training module. With this in mind Designing Digitally, Inc. built a Flash based learning tool with text that can be increased in size, as well as audio which narrates all text within the modules. Upon anonymous registration and log-in which allows users to start back where they left off at anytime, users are taken through each lesson where they learn valuable information about the laws of driving. In order to keep the modules from being simply page turning, users are asked scenario based questions throughout the lessons including multiple choice questions, drag and drop, matching, and even controlling a virtual vehicle through a scenario. At the end of all lessons, users take a practice exam which will help prepare them for the actual exam that they will take to receive their driver’s permit. Additionally, users will receive feedback on questions they missed which will direct them to the appropriate section to review.
Not only is the system engaging for students, but is also user friendly for the administrator. The system was developed with a web-based back-end that consists of a content management system. The administrator is able to log into the control panel and move slides around by dragging and dropping those slides in order. The administrator can also edit a slide and swap out text, audio clips, and video clips at any given time. This empowerment allows the State of Vermont to be able to edit the system on their own as the policies and procedures evolve over time.
The start of the project consisted of the development of the storyboard which was based off of Vermont’s 90 page driver’s training manual. Designing Digitally, Inc. decided it was best to create this project using 3D modeling and interactive mediums in order to appeal to the teenage audience that is immersed in the digital realm on a daily basis. Once the manual was converted into an effective storyboard that met each learning objective, the virtual world of Second Life was used to create 3D spaces representing Vermont.
Second Life is a virtual world where people are able to log in and collaborate on 3D models and scripts, as well as communicate via voice and text chat in real time. By using this medium Designing Digitally, Inc. was able to setup a virtual movie set where virtual actors played out the scenarios within the storyboard and videographers recorded each clip. Sets consisted of rural streets, city streets, and highways, as well as all four seasons and all weather conditions to show each and every aspect of driving in the State of Vermont.
In total, over 900 video clips were recorded, along with additional Second Life photos and those clips and photos were used to create the final Flash animations that are seen in the web-based learning tool.

We have completed the Victor Center for Jewish Genetic Diseases Second Life headquarters. This island will not only create a virtual presence for the organization, but will also set a precedence for the entire cultural health society. Being the first of its kind to offer health information and guidance through a virtual platform, the Victor Center will allow visitors to view videos, read articles and listen to audio clips from real world people that are faced with unfortunate circumstances in their everyday lives. The island will also allow those who wish to share their own stories and experiences with others the ability to submit video or audio of themselves and/or text articles.
The island is complete with an outdoor auditorium, conference meeting spaces, a private consultation room, a resource building which houses all the text, video and audio pieces, and a virtual store that will allow users to purchase a Victor Center t-shirt to wear in world and show their support. A sandbox area is set up on the island for hosting building contents, which the Victor Center plans to host monthly. The final area that was added to this island is our Second Life tutorial area, as with all of our islands we don't want new users landing and feeling lost and not knowing what to do, so we make sure to add our interactive tutorials so everyone has a solid understanding of using Second Life.
