DriveVermont E-Learning Module Complete!

Posted on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 02:51

Designing Digitally, Inc. was contracted by the State of Vermont to develop an innovative web-based training tool for the Vermont DMV named DriveVermont. This free interactive program has been designed to help residents of Vermont learn to drive safely. The user friendly system was developed using a multitude of applications and mediums to form a visually appealing and interactive solution that helps potential drivers learn the rules of the road in Vermont.

The specifications for the project included accessibility features, as well as the ability for users with low bandwidth or lower end computer systems to access the training module. With this in mind Designing Digitally, Inc. built a Flash based learning tool with text that can be increased in size, as well as audio which narrates all text within the modules. Upon anonymous registration and log-in which allows users to start back where they left off at anytime, users are taken through each lesson where they learn valuable information about the laws of driving. In order to keep the modules from being simply page turning, users are asked scenario based questions throughout the lessons including multiple choice questions, drag and drop, matching, and even controlling a virtual vehicle through a scenario. At the end of all lessons, users take a practice exam which will help prepare them for the actual exam that they will take to receive their driver’s permit. Additionally, users will receive feedback on questions they missed which will direct them to the appropriate section to review.

Not only is the system engaging for students, but is also user friendly for the administrator. The system was developed with a web-based back-end that consists of a content management system. The administrator is able to log into the control panel and move slides around by dragging and dropping those slides in order. The administrator can also edit a slide and swap out text, audio clips, and video clips at any given time. This empowerment allows the State of Vermont to be able to edit the system on their own as the policies and procedures evolve over time.

The start of the project consisted of the development of the storyboard which was based off of Vermont’s 90 page driver’s training manual. Designing Digitally, Inc. decided it was best to create this project using 3D modeling and interactive mediums in order to appeal to the teenage audience that is immersed in the digital realm on a daily basis. Once the manual was converted into an effective storyboard that met each learning objective, the virtual world of Second Life was used to create 3D spaces representing Vermont.

Second Life is a virtual world where people are able to log in and collaborate on 3D models and scripts, as well as communicate via voice and text chat in real time. By using this medium Designing Digitally, Inc. was able to setup a virtual movie set where virtual actors played out the scenarios within the storyboard and videographers recorded each clip. Sets consisted of rural streets, city streets, and highways, as well as all four seasons and all weather conditions to show each and every aspect of driving in the State of Vermont.

In total, over 900 video clips were recorded, along with additional Second Life photos and those clips and photos were used to create the final Flash animations that are seen in the web-based learning tool.

The development is open to the public at: http://drivevermont.vermont.gov/

Congrats To Our Employee - 2009 SIGGRAPH Crowd Favorite Award Winner!

Posted on Tue, 08/11/2009 - 20:33

We are proud to announce that our Lead Interactive Media Designer at Designing Digitally, Inc., Greg Wark, has won Crowd Favorite at the 2009 SIGGRAPH GameJam! 24hr character design, character modeling, character texturing, character rigging, and character animation challenge. The contest was to create a fully functional character and detailed short story within 24 straight hours from storyboard production to the entire finalized animation. They had worked straight through while distractions were presented to them to make them lose focus. Regardless of how many distractions were introduced, Greg was successfully able to develop the characters to allow his avatar to be chosen as the Crowd Favorite in the 2009 GameJam! at SIGGRAPH hosted in New Orleans. Below is a snapshot of the character built by our creative designer. Everyone here at Designing Digitally, Inc. is very proud of Greg and am very glad to have him on our development team.

Tech Camp Was A Huge Success!

Posted on Fri, 07/03/2009 - 03:44

Thanks to all the hard work from the Putnam County Educational Service Center in collaboration with Designing Digitally, Inc., Andrew, and Alex Hughes. The two week technology camp was a great success for the rural area of Putnam County, Ohio. The students were taught how to use open source programs to develop photos, signs, T-shirts, magnets, video games, 3D models, Virtual Worlds, and much more!

 pcesc_02.jpg

We are glad that our President and our team could assist in putting together such a positive summer camp for kids and hopefully we met Andrew's goal of planting just one small seed of interest into those middle school kids.  We look forward to taking time out of our daily routine next year to help advance our future leaders by giving them the opportunity to experience the new cutting edge open source technologies out there. To read more about the camp you can view the article on the Lima News website at: http://www.limaohio.com/news/camp-38731-hughes-pupils.html

Summer Technology Camp - Middle School Rural Tech Camp For Kids

Posted on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 01:00

We are proud to announce that the president of Designing Digitally, Inc., Andrew Hughes, will be facilitating a summer technology camp in Putnam County (where he is originally from) this summer. Andrew goes back each year to help kids in rural areas learn open source software so that students can discover what options are out there to develop and create without spending any money. Each year the students are provided with jump drives (U3 drives) that have open source software such as Gimpshop, Inkscape, OpenOffice.org, and even the Hippo Client installed. This ensures that there are no issues with software being installed on the childrens/parents home computers. From there the students are shown how to use Second Life for educational purposes (OpenSim is actually installed on a local machine for security reasons and they connect to that during the camp and learn to build, interact, etc.). The kids also get to make t-shirts, magnets, and videos which are put on YouTube (with permission from their parents). When Andrew was a student at Columbus Grove he was fortune enough to be a participant of this camp. After leaving Putnam County for college he was informed the camp was no longer being held. He approached the PCESC and asked if he could facilitate this camp to help continue this technology tradition.Without the knowledge that Andrew gained from attending the camp, he truly believes that it is unlikely he would have attended school for Digital Design or started Designing Digitally, Inc.According to Andrew, “Kids do not know what they have never been subjected to. Hopefully planting the seed of interest in the students will spark them to integrate technology into their lives.” Assistants this year include Andrew’s younger brother, Alex Hughes (who is currently attending Bowling Green State University for Visual Communication Technology) and Shawn Fairborn from the PCESC. Designing Digitally, Inc.’s technology camp has been such as a success that we have extended the camp from one week to two weeks which will be held this year from June 15th – June 19th and June 22nd – June 26th. We are excited to help out the rural middle schools kids by showing them what’s out there in the technology realm. There might be a Bill Gates (sorry anti-windows people) or Steve Wozniak (sorry anti-apple people) living in these rural areas but might never be given a seed to start growing their technology interest without this camp.
