The Challenge:
Delaware Area Career Center provides a unique opportunity to students in Delaware, Ohio and the surrounding area. Students get real world experiences and gain skills and knowledge in new and emerging careers. To promote the school and programs, the staff decided to create a virtual presence in Second Life based off of the success of another career center in Ohio - Miami Valley CTC. The school wanted to create a space to host events, showcase campus highlights and provide a place for student collaboration and team building. Due to budget and time constraints the difficult part was then deciding what was going to be included as the virtual space simply could not hold all the programs and information that the school has to offer.
The Solution:
After determining what needs would be filled, a private island was purchased in Second Life. It was determined that the goal of the island would be for recruiting, therefore replications of the schools two main buildings would be created and a select number of programs would be showcased in the space. This would give prospective as well as incoming students the opportunity to learn the layout of the school and familiarize themselves with classroom locations without ever even stepping foot in the real building.
The Results:
With a replication of their campus the school can now give high school students, parents, teachers and visitors a tour of the campus and provide information virtually. Users can learn about and even apply for many of the programs the school has to offer including Fire and EMT, Automotive Technology, Early Childhood Education, Information Technology, Business Management and much more. There is a small outdoor auditorium for group presentations and events and a sandbox area that gives students and visitors the ability to build and explore the possibilities of Second Life.
