The Challenge:
The Oliver Wyman Group wanted to ease into virtual worlds and at first started with Designing Digitally on a shared Second Life island. After finding success and a high level of traffic, they decided it was time to upgrade to their own private island. This would give them more freedom to host events on their schedule and it would also give them more space in general to add additional features. A private island also allows the ability to iinvite more people to virtual world meetings and conferences. Oliver Wyman is an international management consulting firm and therefore, a virtual world created a great place to meet with clients from all over the world.
The Solution:
Designing Digitally and Oliver Wyman wasted no time with the start of the new island. Parts of the old shared space could be re-used but for the most part the design style and theme saw a complete revamp. The island needed four major areas: a large amphitheater, a headquarters building for small formal meetings, an informal meeting space, and small break out spaces for one on one meetings with clients and small teams. Designing Digitally was able create all of these spaces in a tropical themed island with large gardens and easy to navigate pathways. Since they would be meeting with many novice Second Life users, Designing Digitally also added a tutorial area that users land as soon as they come to the island.
The Results:
Oliver Wyman has enjoyed their island through many virtual conferences and meet-ups. They have received positive feedback from their visitors and clients. The company has been excited to host multiple virtual game show like challenges in their amphitheater and appreciate the freedom of their own private island. This island was featured as a Second Life showcase in early 2010 because of the design style and ease of use.
