Technavio predicts that by 2020, the market for corporate m learning solutions will record a CAGR of approximately 17%. But despite these predictions, mobile learning faces challenges in the corporate training sector. These challenges must be overcome to reap the advantages of m-learning for employees.
Here are four challenges that create barriers to the adoption of mobile learning strategy.
As corporations are embracing the Bring-Your-Own-Device policy, there is an increasing chance of security threats involved. Several organizations shy away from including mobile learning in their learning strategy due to this threat.
But, this threat can be controlled with robust controls in place. These controls ensure that employees who use their personal devices to access learning do so without compromising the organization’s security. Educating employees about the risks involved and the associated damage that could incur mitigates this risk. Tight security controls will protect internal security.
Content created for classroom training cannot be reused as-is. It is easy for computers and laptops to manage certain formats and file sizes. But mobile devices may not be able to do the same. It is necessary to repurpose the existing content in a way that it is compatible with the mobile devices.
This may be a problem for existing learning, but, new learning can be designed with the most effective content delivery. Existing learning can be adapted for mobile learning. This way, content will be device agnostic and users can view it on any device they choose.
Implementing any new technology will have an initial investment. The infrastructure and resources needed must be created, from scratch. Redesigning existing training to be usable on the mobile device will be a cost. Organizations that choose to provide employees with company devices will need to make this investment as well.
But this is only an initial up-front investment. The long-term benefits outweigh the initial investment due to the return on investment (ROI) that will be realized. With mobile learning, money can be saved on travel, accommodation , space, and facilitator that is required for traditional classroom training. There is no need for additional equipment for the training. Paper costs are eliminated, which reduces the carbon footprint. Considering the learning benefits derived from mobile learning by your employees, then the initial investment is well worth it.
It may not be easy to justify the expense of the mobile learning program, initially. It is only in the long run, that the investment will be realized. Many organizations do not have a good evaluation system to measure the tangible and intangible benefits for determining ROI.
But with the rise in popularity of mobile learning, organizations are able to develop metrics and analytical tools to track the profitability.
