Best Practices to Use When Developing Game-Based Learning

Game-based learning is a great way to keep learners motivated and invested in the content. Research has concluded that the game-based learning market is growing and is expected to hit 7.3 billion by the year 2021. One study done by the UC-Denver Business School found that participants who learned in the form of playing games ended up with an increase of 14% in skill-based knowledge, an increase of 11% in factual knowledge, and an increase of 9% in retention rates when compared to those who were presented material through other methods.

Even with great success, it is important to keep in mind that there are critical factors that make game-based learning effective. Here are some best practices that you can follow to develop a game-based learning solution that rocks!

#1: Your Learning Objectives Must Be Well-Defined

These objectives determine the game’s format and execution. Clearly specify what the learners must be able to do. Tell them about the evaluation criteria on which they will be judged.

#2: Learner's Brains Are Ready to Learn in a Fun Environment

Use game mechanics to weave in fun in the training content. But, it is essential to remember that the real goal here is not just making it fun. Your learning experience should have enough fun to engage users without distracting them from the learning.

#3: The Game Should Be Interactive

Make sure you have elements that make the learner apply what they are learning in the module. Opt for a branching scenario-based approach where your learners will make choices and be held accountable for them.

#4: Put in the Right Amount of Challenge

If you make the levels too easy, then the learners will get bored. If you make it too difficult, the learners may give up midway. So, it needs to be balanced carefully. Start simple and then gradually move to more advanced requirements. Test it at every level.

#5: Rewards Keep Your Learners Going

You need to reward them for accomplishing certain milestones throughout the game, which not only makes them feel good but increases their motivation. It can be as simple as an achievement badge, lunch coupon, or movie tickets, or as big as a sponsored vacation. Whatever rewards you choose, you must be sure that the learners care about the prize and are willing to work towards achieving it.
