Mobile training solutions are known to improve work performance, are more efficient than traditional learning solutions, and cost less to implement. They are also easy to accommodate in busy schedules, making them the go-to tools in corporate training.
However, creating an effective mobile training course can be a daunting task. It is not simply transferring eLearning into a mobile-friendly format. Here are the best top five tips to help you create a valuable mLearning experience for your employees.
Mobile training solutions must have a simple, user-friendly interface. Keep the screen size in mind as the small screens make it difficult to navigate. To make life easier, use large fonts on the buttons. Create a layout that is intuitive. Keep the navigations cues concise and clear across all the screens. Ensure that the buttons and icons are clear. There are certain existing navigation controls in mLearning solutions. For example, the learners can simply swipe to go to the next page.
Online training should not make learners download heavy files, especially mLearning solutions. It takes a long time for heavy files to download on the mobile. Also, not all learners have the same connectivity. The download speed will depend on the available data speed. Do not frustrate employees by slow download buffers. All the files and images must be optimized.
mLearning should have short modules. Ideally, they should be below five to six minutes. Within that time, the main takeaways of the topic must be covered. Employees will be accessing the learning on-the-go. Avoiding unnecessary fluff will keep productivity high. Highlight the important points that are essential for them. Each of the modules needs to be available as a separate module, so that the learners are not forced to access them in a linear fashion. Learner need to be able to get to the information they are looking for without having to go through unnecessary content.
Learners are easily bored, if they have to scroll for information continuously. To avoid the never-ending scroll, make sure that the screen content does not cover more than three screen lengths on a single page. Divide the course material into distinct subsections, removing unnecessary details in the layout for enhanced interpretation.
Mobile training designers must keep in mind that learners will access the learning while on the move. There will be surrounding noise, light variations, regular interruptions, and so on. Thus, font, icons, and graphics need to be kept simple and clean. Large fonts with content broken into small chunks are easy to decipher on a mobile device. Avoid the temptation of using customized font. Also, the images should be smaller so that the entire screen is not cluttered.
