Four Tips to Make Your eLearning Effective

It is easy to create simple eLearning courses. But making it effective so that the learners are engaged is a more difficult job. It takes a great deal of time and effort. There are a number of elements that must be focused on. Instead of starting to build it from scratch, concentrating on four important elements of the course will make it work.

Here are four tips on how you can improve the effectiveness of your eLearning.

Tip #1: Visual design

The visuals shape the attitude of the learner. If you are using poor quality, irrelevant visuals, then learners will not be too impressed. If you want to enhance the effectiveness of the course, focus on delivering top class design and visuals. Ensure that your course is not overloaded with graphics, texts, and links. The more the clutter, the more confused your learner will be. The learner experience must be streamlined by removing all elements that do not add any value to the learner. The content needs to be structured in a user-friendly layout.

Tip #2: Content

Content is almost always the king. Make sure you do not bloat it with unnecessary supplements. Employees are typically hard pressed for time. They do not want to spend time on irrelevant material. If any part of the content does not meet the learning objective, it should not be featured in the course. Make sure that you have researched the learning material thoroughly so that wrong information is not presented to the learners. The topics must have a logical flow so that the learners are not confused. Chunk the topics according to their relevance and introduce concepts to the learners in a way that they can digest and assimilate.

Tip #3: Navigation

Navigation is often overlooked in eLearning courses. Most of the focus is on how to present concepts in a learner-friendly manner. But, unless the navigation is smooth, the learner will spend most of his or her attention trying to figure out how to move forward. The design of the arrows, icons, buttons, and other navigational aids must be done well. Do not make it too complex. Smooth navigation will encourage learners to explore more topics.

Tip #4: Interactivity

Well-designed learning should be interactive. Employees will learn best when they are engaged with the concepts that are being presented. If the course is constantly asking learners to do something, even if it is just clicking the ‘Next’ button, it is difficult to be distracted. On the other hand, if screen after screen of boring content is thrown at the learners, they will lose interest and learning will not occur. Use click-and-reveal buttons or twisties to present content. Learners will have to click the buttons to see the content. Be sure to add in assessments and quizzes after each concept. That way, they will have to pay attention to the content. Try branching scenarios. Having learners do something at regular intervals keeps them attentive.
