Progressive learning organizations cannot ignore the growing field of mobile learning. But, blindly jumping onto the bandwagon is not advisable. You should have a mobile learning strategy to ensure that your training program has a solid base on which it can be built further. Mobile learning strategies ensure savings at the design phase. In addition, it integrates metrics that are actionable and help you measure the success of the mobile learning solution
Prior to considering mobile training, a thorough needs analysis must be conducted to determine the goals for the training that assist the organization to achieve its strategic plan. After the goals have been determined, there are five primary ways to ensure a sound mobile learning strategy for your organization.
The first step in developing a successful mobile learning strategy is to identify and analyze the target audience. You need to keep in mind that your employees are hard-pressed for time and may need to multi-task. They will choose to go the mobile way only if it saves them time and effort. Your mobile learning strategy should be able to offer information conveniently and quickly. Before rolling the solution out, a needs analysis should also encompass the educational and professional background of the learners.
You need to decide if you want to make the content available on iOS and/or Android. Do you want to include graphics? If yes, you need to consider all devices. Have you considered the screen sizes of the mobile devices your employee will use? Do you want to deliver via the web? Or do you prefer using apps that can be downloaded from the store? The final decision depends on the content and your audience.
Using a mobile device is one thing, while learning on the device is a separate skill in itself. This applies both to the facilitators and the learners. Just like with upgrading any other kind of equipment at a corporate level, users need to get the skills and know-how to use them effectively. You need to consider if your employees are open to embracing new technology. Do you have the required infrastructure? Unless you are absolutely sure that they are ready to adopt mobile learning, you should not rush it.
Always be as transparent as possible. If you have decided to go ahead with a mobile learning strategy for your training needs, communicate it to your employees. This is the best way to gain the necessary approval. If your target audience is clear about what they can expect, they will trust you. As a result, it will be easier for you to launch your mobile learning solution and drive success.
How should the effectiveness of a given mobile learning solution be measured? How will you determine success? What data should be collected from learners and how? It is not enough to collect. You need to decide how you are going to use the data collected to improve your mobile learning solution. Assessing the training will assist you to determine how well the training is meeting the desired outcomes, as well as determining changes that need to be made, if the training did not fulfill all of the outcomes.
