Simulations in training is not a new concept. It has been used in military and aerospace for decades. With technological advancements, simulation-based training has become more affordable and has expanded its use to other sectors.
Any industry can choose to train its employees with customized simulations. They can develop their own solutions or hire an expert. Training in a simulated environment has several benefits and tangible outcomes. Here are a few industries that have embraced the advantages of simulation-based training.
In the mining sector, simulators are used to train operators. The main aim here is operator safety. Operators work in a simulated environment to perfect their skills with surface and underground mining equipment. Even if they make mistakes, there is no real-world damage associated with it.
The situation is similar in the construction sector. Operators train virtually with the help of simulators. They need not worry about accidents that may happen if they make any mistakes operating the equipment.
Both of these scenarios provide evidence of how simulation training can help employers avoid employees becoming physically hurt due to lack of training, as well as damage to equipment.
Livestock management operates with a tight profit margin. A small error can cause significant loss. Producers need to test every strategy they wish to adopt. But, testing production strategy in the real world can be risky. With simulations, producers can test several options without causing any health risk to the livestock. They can also avoid the practical delays that happen in the real-world. In crop management, simulations help agriculturists to determine the outcome of certain parameters on the growth of the crop. That way, they can strategize for higher growth and lower costs.
Healthcare providers need to be trained to be able to respond to any critical situation. Simulator-based training is the best way for the providers to train in a safe surrounding. If they make wrong decisions, the patient’s life is not endangered. By practicing the same skill repeatedly, their brain gets programmed so as not to make the same wrong decisions in a real scenario. Not all aspects of their training can be simulated, though. Some training does require hands-on training in a clinical setting.
Air transportation has been one of the first adopters of simulator-based training with their traditional flight simulators. Pilots complete a part of their training virtually. Obviously, they cannot afford to learn through mistakes on their job. There are too many lives at risk. 3D simulations are now being used for training maintenance staff and ground support personnel.
Defense is a critical industry. It is focused on ensuring that the military personnel are prepared at all times and can respond efficiently to all kinds of environmental situations. Defense organizations are investing heavily in simulated solutions that help them train a skilled workforce. Again, wrong decisions in a simulated training environment do not result in the real loss of life or damage to equipment.
Using simulated training in organizations ensures business competitiveness. It helps employees practice their work skills and boost their confidence. The more time spent practicing, the better they master the skills. The result is reflected in their productivity, engagement and retention. The ultimate outcome is increased profits for the bottom line.
