mLearning Tips and Tricks

Are you considering converting face-to-face or computer-based training to mLearning? The way learners use mobiles is different from how they use computers. It is essential to understand this of mLearning training, if you want your mLearning development to be successful. Simply converting face-to-face or computer-based training in its current format to mLearning will not lead to a successful outcome.

Below are the top six tips to help you create a quality mLearning training program that will engage your learners, improve productivity and improve the bottom line of your organization.

#1: Use bite-sized content

Studies have confirmed that users start losing their concentration after 90 seconds while learning on their mobile devices. If you want your learners to be engaged and work alongside the learning content, then you should not go beyond two minutes. Chunking your content into small bite-sized topics is the best approach so that you do not overwhelm your learners.

#2: Integrate creative interaction

MLearning makes use of creative interaction modes like rotation, speech input, and shaking a device. Using interactions like wikis, podcasts, and discussion forum for your employees allows them to collaborate with their peers. An important thing to keep in mind is that you need to gradually introduce interactivity. This enables your learners to become comfortable and results in greater confidence.

#3: Pay attention to on-screen elements

Choose graphics wisely for your mobile learning. Keep the sizes and resolutions of the devices your employees use. Scalable vector graphics are a wise choice because it allows you to edit graphic elements by changing the shape, size, and color. Try and use relative screen sizes for on-screen elements so that the content can modify itself based on the screen layout of the device. It is best to avoid complex graphics in the mLearning solution. Also, design each screen in a way that the learner does not need to scroll.

#4: Make the navigation easy to follow

The navigation of the course should be simple. If you overcomplicate the movement, then mobile learners may lose interest in the course. You should avoid crowding the screens with clickable buttons and icons. The screen sizes of mobile devices are limited in size. If you make the learners click too many buttons, they will become disinterested.

#5: Choose the presentation mode

Always choose the mode of presentation by keeping the device in mind. All learners do not use the same learning medium. Some use mobiles, some use tablets, and so on. These devices have different screen sizes. It makes the best sense to design keeping the smallest screen size in mind.

#6: Replace text with audio

One way to deal with long text is to replace it with audio. That way, you can pass on the relevant information without overwhelming the learner. But you also need to keep in mind where the learners will access the course. If they have to listen to the audio, they need to learn in a reasonably quiet surrounding or be in an atmosphere where ear buds are appropriate. If they are accessing the module in the factory or shop floor, it might not be ideal.
