Usage of mobile devices is growing at a rapid pace triggered by the affordable pricing of devices and increase in connectivity. It is not surprising they have come to play an important role in shaping the learning scenario in the workplace.  

Here are top five mobile trends that are here to stay.

#1: HTML5 from Flash

Flash has been ruling the mobile content scenario for years. But it’s time to say goodbye. Learning designers are phasing it out and embracing HTML5. This is the new technology for rendering animations and videos to mobile devices. HTML5 is the best available solution to make e-learning responsive. 

#2: Big data

Opt for an LMS that has inbuilt analytics. Big Data helps to gauge learner preferences and improve the mobile strategy, accordingly. Device usage, mobile traffic, and other learner actions can be tracked. The resulting data will identify weaknesses of the course and improvements can be made to the features that do not meet expectations. For example, if more learners are skipping a particular module, big data will indicate this.  The module can then be redesigned based on feedback from the learners. 

#3: Responsive web design

To provide a consistent learning experience for the learners, a responsive design should be considered. The learner may be allowed to choose the device of their choice for learning without being inconvenienced. For example, a learner should be allowed to start a course on a tablet and continue on their smartphone, and yet not face any trouble accessing the course. A responsive course automatically adjusts to the screen size and resolution. When a learner shifts from one device to another, the text and imaged modify their layout to suit the relevant device.

#4: Bite-size learning

Providing bite-sized and just-in-time learning to learners has more relevance than having them go through hours of training. If learners have access to information at the time they need it, they are able to carry out crucial tasks without wasting time. For example, they are at a client site and need some financial information to pitch a sale; they should be able to access the information with ease. This also boosts employee confidence. They know that they have support at the moment of need. Also, when knowledge is applied in their daily work, employees remember it better.

#5: Video-based learning

Videos are effective tools of learning. Learners prefer videos over dry text. Videos help the learners to retain information better. They are also effective in hooking learners to the content. It is easy to develop learning videos that sync with mobile devices. It’s a win-win proposition for both – the learners and the trainers. Trainers leverage the power of video training to provide micro-learning nuggets for learners. Learners are happy to access the videos at their convenience.
