Why Videos are Perfect for Mobile Training Strategies

YouTube reported that its videos are viewed around 4 billion times each day. Vimeo videos are predicted to be viewed 715 million times each month. And, it’s not just funny videos that have garnered these figures. Other topics like DIY tutorials, biology, mathematics, recipes, artistic performances, have high views. A Forrester report states that a minute of video content is worth 1.8 million words. Thus, it is no surprise that videos are becoming popular training tools in the workplace.

Fosway Group, one of the top HR and learning analyzers of Europe, surveyed learning professionals for a research study. 77% of the respondents agreed that the biggest demands in learning technologies are focused on video learning. In fact, video and mobile learning have become one of the most popular methods of learning.

Why are videos rising in popularity?

Many learners prefer videos over eLearning modules with text and images. Moving images can add life to dull and dry content. Videos allow you to present content in a way that keeps the learners hooked. And, yet another advantage of videos is that learners can control the way they view it. They can rewind, pause, and fast-forward based on what they want to see in the video.

Videos are usually crisp and precise. You can convey a lot of information in a short time with the help of animation. This takes away boredom and reduces cognitive load on the learners. They can access it on demand at the time they need to learn. Suppose a learner is working on a tool and cannot move beyond a point. If there is a video tutorial describing the feature they’re working on, they can pull up that particular tutorial and resolve the issue. Since they learned it at the point-of-need, chances are they will remember it for a long time.

Why do videos and mobile learning seem like a great match?

Almost all of us are attached to our phones. We take them with us wherever we go. Videos are mobile compatible. This is one reason why videos are so popular among Gen X, Y, and Z. Baby Boomers are not left behind either. They may not be as tech-savvy as their successors, but they do access mobile videos for learning.

Microlearning deals with delivering useful learning content instantly. Each module focuses only on one learning objective. Learners have the freedom to choose which module they want to view. It’s the same with training videos. Each video focuses on one topic and can be considered a standalone microlearning asset. You can even embed a video into a microlearning nugget.

Videos can be shared. The modern workforce likes to stay connected. They like to share and learn. They are keen on spreading and receiving knowledge with their colleagues in this age of collaboration. This is possible with videos. With a single click, they can share knowledge through their mobile devices. A simple share can turn into a meaningful brainstorming session where like-minded people share ideas and opinions.

Most organizations have already realized that mobile learning is the way forward for elearning. The consumption of learning videos is also on the rise. Taking into consideration the mobility of modern employees and better connectivity, learning designers have a huge opportunity to explore video content for their courses.

With the technological advancement and availability of smartphones, it has become easier to upload, download, and share videos. If you have not already joined, now is the time to join the mobile learning wave.
