Gamification has become a vital component of corporate training for two main reasons.
Designers realized it was important to develop games that were engaging for the learners. Adding game elements to an elearning activity is a relatively simple way to integrate some fun and engage employees.
Gamification is cost-effective. Game-based learning activities can be produced at costs that are similar to traditional training materials, while decreasing ongoing training costs. Some companies have to hire outside people to come in and perform trainings or pay their own employees extra to do the administration. Similarly, some businesses have to pay for their employees to travel to other places for training. These costs are virtually eliminated by the use of elearning games.
Gamification is engaging and budget-friendly for a company to use and are the basis for why this method is used. The next issue to consider is why it works.
Trainees take an active role in their own learning. Elearning games are interactive. The more a user engages with the activity, the more knowledge they will retain. Correct application is the proof that true learning has taken place. More conventional training methods don’t result in the same high level of retention which ends up being wasted time for the company.
Gamification increases critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Most game-based activities will center around a narrative. The user is faced with a challenge for which they must provide a solution. The virtual world of the game allows learners to think through issues without risk. Immediate feedback gives the players a chance to assess their decisions and make different ones if needed.
It allows for self-paced learning. Employees can work through the training program at their own speed. This is another important factor in the rate of retention. A learner who is forced to rush through a program may not have sufficient time to comprehend everything they need to learn.
Having fun while learning is a game-changer. One of the reasons that gamification is so effective is the fun-factor. When learners are having fun they are focused, interested, and excited about the content. The lower rate of recall associated with traditional training methods can largely be attributed to boredom and lack of interest.
Gamification in corporate training has modernized and improved the way employees are trained to do their jobs. This is a definite benefit for the company, the employees, and ultimately those they serve.
