The decision to hire a company to provide a training service isn’t always an easy one for a client. There’s a lot to consider. Does the company hold themselves to a high standard in terms of the quality of their product? Is the job commensurate with the client’s budget? It all plays into the client’s decision to work with a particular company.
Possibly one of the determining factors is how easy the actual people in the company are to work with. A client may be impressed with one company’s portfolio but give their business to another one who treats them as valuable customers.
Designing Digitally understands that the client’s satisfaction isn’t only dependent on the quality of work, but also on the quality of their interactions.
The lead designer on a team should fully realize that their work affects everyone else’s. The correct perspective should come from a place of humility. No one wants to be on a team with a designer whose mission is to have their vision trump anyone else’s. The client deserves a cohesive team working on their project to give them the best product possible.
A team that has mutual respect for each aspect of the design process will ultimately have greater success than one that is fraught with tension. A client can tell when their project isn’t given the attention it deserves because there is an issue within the team.
The design lead can set the tone and should do so.
How does a team function so that each member feels like their voice is heard, including the client?
It’s not always easy, although it is possible if some guidelines like these are followed by the design lead:
Be ready for team meetings. When it’s time to get together with the group, be prepared with the latest information pertaining to the project.
Be a good listener. A client wants to feel like their ideas and concerns are heard. The same is true of the other people working on the project. The design lead should be able to listen to each concern and help find solutions that work for everyone.
Make the necessary judgment calls. Leaders are expected to make decisions and do so in a reasonable amount of time. The other members of the team will look to the designer to make important decisions that affect their timelines for completing their own tasks.
Be able to let go of ideas for the good of the team and the client. The designers’ creativity can sometimes make it hard for them to be objective about their own ideas. A good leader will be able to recognize when the good of the project means their own ideas need to go on the backburner.
A client doesn’t want to partner with a design team that doesn’t work well together. They know that their product is only as good as the designers, developers, artists, and marketers who can form a cohesive group, unified for a common goal.
