The Client

Designing Digitally proudly partnered with Federal Student Aid (FSA), an integral office within the U.S. Department of Education. FSA conducted a highly successful Instructor-Led Training focused on improving critical thinking skills for employees.

Recognizing the need for a cost-effective and accessible solution, FSA engaged Designing Digitally to create an engaging online course that could cater to new hires and those who missed the initial training.

The Challenge

FSA faced the challenge of delivering critical thinking content to a diverse audience, including new hires and employees who attended the previous training. Additionally, the solution had to comply with 508 standards, ensuring accessibility for all learners. The course needed to be the first mobile-accessible offering from FSA, adding another layer of complexity.

The solution

Designing Digitally crafted a responsive mLearning module with a non-linear structure. This allowed learners to navigate quickly to specific topics of interest, making the course effective for both new and returning participants. The mobile-first approach ensured seamless usability on smartphones, with large buttons and minimal onscreen content. Upholding 508 compliance posed a unique challenge on mobile devices, leading to a strategic decision to prioritize full 508 compliance on the desktop/laptop version while keeping the mobile version as a valuable tool for learners not requiring assistive technology.

The IMPACT

The results have been transformative for FSA. The online course in critical thinking skills has successfully replaced the need for all-day Instructor-Led Training sessions. Now, employees can access the material at any time, work at their own pace, and refer to it on their mobile phones, providing just-in-time training. The elimination of physical location constraints has streamlined the learning process, allowing flexibility and accessibility for all employees. FSA’s internal marketing materials showcase the course and its new mobile platform, including videos, posters, emails, and handouts, reinforcing the positive impact of this innovative learning solution.
