The challenge

Wright State University commissioned Designing Digitally to design and create a 3D virtual reality simulation to be used in therapy for post-traumatic stress (PTSD) focused on veterans entering civilian life and attending college and their campus. With a Virtual Reality head-mounted display, users would be immersed in the 3D environment to experience events that may occur on campus that could trigger anxiety in a safe controlled way while providing familiarization to people attending courses at the school. The goal is to reduce anxiety entering academia for newly returning veterans to civilian life. To help improve their ability to bridge the gap between military and civilian transition. The goal is to provide immersive 3D simulation orientation training for Veterans entering college.

The Solution

The team at Designing Digitally visited the campus in person to take photographs of the environment and objects that would be replicated in the Metaverse and used in the simulation experiences. Utilizing blueprints of the building for accurate proportions when laying out the models. Textures were created for the environment and objects as we built the models on top of that framework. The development of the environment replicated the University settings which would be the backdrop for the simulations.

Along with the visual familiarity, performance was another contending factor. Due to the increased hardware requirements brought on by high-definition stereoscopic rendering we worked to reduce complexity and rendering draw calls. With that in mind, special care was taken to keep the models accurate without overcomplicating scenes which could lead to performance issues when all the other code and character elements were added.
