Elearning Design: Common Mistakes Made and How to Avoid Them

Putting up an impressive elearning design takes a lot of effort from the learning designer. The last thing you would want is for the learners to notice a flaw and the training to lose credibility.   While a great first impression can set the tone for the rest of the content, a mediocre impression can set training back. There are a few pointers to keep in mind, while working on any elearning design assignment to avoid common mistakes. And, even if you feel confident your organization is not committing any of these errors, a quick reminder can’t hurt.

#1: Overloading the screen with text

In an effort to pass on all the possible knowledge about a topic, many designers end up putting too much text in the course material. Just laying the text out in bullets does not always help. If the learners do not find the overloaded text useful, they will simply skip it. If you must provide all the information, break it into logical chunks. Mix and match multimedia to present the same information. In order for learning to occur, avoid overwhelming your learners.

#2: Using irrelevant images

In many instances, learning designers end up using images to fill up white spaces and not always to complement the text. This kind of image placement within the elearning design is futile and breaks the learner’s concentration. No matter how much you like a particular graphic, the only reason behind putting it in the course must be its relevance. Sometimes, it is best to put your urge for an increased aesthetic appeal at rest and stick to presenting the course material in the most effective manner.

#3: Overlooking the importance of fonts

Fonts are one of the most underrated, yet significant components of any elearning design. Deciding which font would look the best on the screen is a key part of the designer’s job. The choice of fonts should complement the overall design. Whether you wish to give a formal or an informal look to your course material depends a great deal on your choice of font.

#4: Ignoring a responsive design

The variety of digital devices used in the market today is much more than what it was even five years ago. Therefore, it is imperative for the elearning design to be compatible with a wide range of mobile devices. The entire point of switching to elearning is to provide the learners an ease of access, and this can only be ensured if the learning is responsive and the users have a consistent experience irrespective of the device they are using.

#5: Making the navigation difficult

The course navigation is an important element of the elearning design. Learners should not have any trouble trying to navigate from one topic to the other, and then back home. Limit the levels and avoid using labels and graphics that are misleading.
