A Sneak Peek Into the Elearning of the Future

Posted on Tue, 09/04/2018 - 09:26

E-learning has evolved over the past decade. Initially, a typical e-learning course would include video clips demonstrating a job. Learners were asked few assessment questions before they were allowed to proceed. Since this did not work as desired, e-learning was made more interactive with better graphics, simulations, learning paths, and so on. With the social Learning Management System, learners were provided control over the way they liked to learn. They had the freedom to track their progress and improve scores.

We do not know where it will lead to, next. But, we know the technologies we have currently. We can make an informed guess on how these technologies will influence the direction e-learning will take.

Here are the top six trends that will influence the e-learning of the future.

corporate e learning

#1: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

MOOCs are open courses available online. They allow hundreds of people to access a course simultaneously, irrespective of their location. MOOCs are free. With time, they may not remain free. But, that should not hinder their growth because MOOCs make learning possible for anyone who has a computer and internet connection.

#2: Cloud-based Learning Management Systems (LMS)

LMS’s are usually located on dedicated servers. This can be costly and cumbersome. If they move to the cloud, then it has the advantage of lower cost, better security, easier maintenance, and better storage facilities. In the future, all LMS’s may move to the cloud.

#3: Gamification

Gamification is all the rage, now. In the future, most e-learning courses may resemble a video game. Learner like the fun game element in their learning. They also like the challenge and social interaction involved. It may not be easy to develop game-based learning. But, you never know what the future holds.

#4: Mobile learning

Mobile devices empowers learners to learn from anywhere, anytime. Newer devices have enhanced camera and video facilities. Future learners will be able to watch video lessons, communicate with other learners via apps, perform science experiments, and similar. Learners can take advantage of GPS facilities, QR codes, and so on. Bandwidth is not a problem anymore. Delivering m-learning in small bite-sizes will be the norm.

#5: Automation

Being able to automate the process of content and quiz creation is a dream feature for any learning designer. Designers may have the opportunity to create customized content with the use of algorithms and codes.

#6: Augmented Reality (AR) learning

Augmented Reality technology is already here. You can expect it to take huge leaps and for AR e-learning to take off in the near future. Imagine you are walking into a room and see an object that interests you. You just point your phone towards it, and voila, you get all the required information. It may sound far-fetched at this point in time. But wait for a few years and this can well be a reality.
