Artificial intelligence (AI) involves designing intelligent software that can analyze the environment and make intelligent choices based on it. But, what role will AI play in elearning? A simple example of AI in learning is a quiz program at the end of a topic that can decide which questions it should ask a learner, based on his previous responses. AI has the ability to gauge the specific areas of improvement needed for each learner and ask questions on those areas.
Using AI in the elearning content is not the only way to incorporate AI into training. There are other ways to use smart algorithms to enhance elearning. One way is to automate the content search process for developers. Here is an example: as a developer, your client wants to present information in several formats – a video, chat-based, a quiz, and an infographic. You could spend hours tracking all the places for the content and reuse it. Or, you could use an AI-based tool to filter the huge amount of information and identify the relevant content. Automating the process not only saves time but also enhances the consistency and quality of the content.
There are several technological giants that offer AI tools for use. Microsoft Azure is a cloud-based set of services used to build and manage AI applications. Amazon Web Services have a multitude of AI services and products. IBM’s Watson offers AI services that you can integrate into your applications.
Here are a few ways the use of AI will affect the elearning landscape in the future.
You can use AI to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the learner and cluster them on that basis. You can provide training material and tests based on that data. Using AI data about learners, you can employ strategies that connect with them on an emotional level by playing into traits like competitiveness. The data provides a deeper insight into learner abilities and aptitude for a specific job role. When you combine an AI tool with the organization’s ERP and L&D platform, you may even be able to track your employees from pre-employment assessment to induction to their daily performance.
Learners can interact with AI assistants that recognize their spoken language. When the learner talks to the elearning platform, the AI enabled system can understand the language and their connotations. They are also able to comprehend their pronunciation, sound variations, and so on.
AI enabled chatbots are quite popular, nowadays. Chatbots can direct learners to a relevant course that they have not taken. It can point out gaps in training, if any. If the learners are required to take a mandatory training but have forgotten about it, the bots can remind them. Chatbots are great tools for reinforcing a skill. They can send messages to the learners, reminding them about a skill they have learned and prompt them to apply it.
Creating content requires the writer to have a deep understanding of the subject. It cannot be replaced by AI algorithms. You need a knowledgeable content specialist for the job. But, AI can be of great help by creating a large sample from a pool of curated content. For example, you can use AI to create a multitude of test questions for specific domains like K12 math and language.
Our world is changing at a rapid pace. AI may not be a magic pill. It will take some time for it to become widely implemented in the learning industry. But, the possibilities are immense.
