Why the Millennial Workforce Needs Mobile Training

Posted on Tue, 12/11/2018 - 14:23

Experts predict that by 2020, the Millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996) and Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) will constitute almost 60% of the workforce. And, research confirms that almost 70% Millennials are unhappy with the way organizations offer them training. They are not too fond of the old methods of push learning through a traditional classroom. They prefer a more tailored program.

One of the best ways to do so is to offer mobile Performance Support Tools that provide assistance  to the learner at the moment-of-need. This can be achieved with mobile learning apps. It reassures the learner that when they need information, they can simply push a button  to access information that will help them fix the problem and proceed.

What is it that Millennials expect from corporate training?

Millennials believe in personalized learning. They prefer a learning path that adjusts with their ever-changing learning needs. They want the power to decide when they should learn and where. They want to be clear about what is expected of them in the first year as well as the next five and get training that will help them meet or exceed these expectations accordingly.

They prefer working in collaboration with others to find better solutions to the problem at hand. They want instant feedback so that they do not venture out further on the wrong path. They are not a fan of text-heavy training content where they are passive listeners. They want interactive training material where they can participate in the learning process. And, most importantly, they want to be able to access learning from anywhere and anytime.

Where does mobile training fit in?

#1: Mobile training is highly effective.

Here are some statistics collected by Mindflash that show how effective mobile training is in comparison to desktop training.

  • On  average, it takes around 17 minutes to complete a course on a desktop, as compared to 9.5 minutes on mobile.
  • There is no major difference in completion rates between mobile and desktop.
  • There is no substantial difference between test scores or pass percentage between the two.
  • Learners seemed to be more comfortable in subsequent reviews of the course material, on mobile (19%) versus the desktop (16%).

#2: Mobile training is brief and can be accessed anytime.

Millennials do not like lengthy training. They prefer short, bite-sized nuggets that are accessible at the exact time they need the information. This can be achieved with the help of microlearning modules. Here, each module focuses on a single topic and are limited to 4 – 5 minutes in duration. Your learner can choose the topic that is relevant to them without having to go through the rest of them. Since the modules are online, your learners can access it anytime they are free. They do not have to be at any physical venue either. They can take the training from their living room, while waiting at the client site, during their travel home, basically anywhere.

#3: Mobile training is collaborative.

As already discussed, Millennials prefer a collaborative work-culture and not a competitive one. They like to brainstorm and discuss before arriving at a specific solution. Mobile training solutions allow you to integrate online communities where your employees can discuss their ideas with their peers. This collaborative technology helps reduce silos, promotes sharing, and builds relationships.

Workplace training is important for enhancing employee skills and knowledge. As Millennials are taking over the workplace, it is critical for organizations to realize that they need to upskill to be able to keep up with the competition. So, you need to provide training in a format that is suitable for them.
