The Client
The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles is the governmental agency responsible for registering and inspecting automobiles and other motor vehicles as well as licensing drivers in the U.S. state of Vermont.
Sneak Peak
The Challenge
Designing Digitally, Inc. was contracted by the State of Vermont to develop an innovative web-based training tool for the Vermont DMV named DriveVermont that covers drivers’ rules and regulations of the Vermont laws. This free interactive eLearning program has been designed to help residents of Vermont learn to drive safely. The user-friendly system was developed using many applications and mediums to form a visually appealing and interactive solution that helps potential drivers know the road rules in Vermont.
The solution
The specifications for the project included accessibility features and the ability for users with low bandwidth or lower-end computer systems to access the training module. With this in mind, an interactive learning tool with text that is able to be increased in size and audio that narrates all text within the eLearning modules. Upon anonymous registration and login, which allows users to start back where they left off at any time, users were trained through each lesson, where they learned valuable information about driving laws.
Users were asked scenario-based questions throughout the lessons, including multiple-choice questions, drag and drop, matching, and even controlling a virtual vehicle through a scenario. At the end of all lessons, users take a practice exam to prepare them for the actual exam they will take to receive their driver’s permit.
Upon completing the practice exam, users can print out a certificate of completion. Additionally, users will receive feedback on missed questions, directing them to the appropriate section to review.
Not only is the system engaging for students, but it is also user-friendly for the administrator. This website’s online learning program training portal was developed with features such as a web-based back-end with a content management system.
The administrator can log into the control panel and move slides around by dragging and dropping those slides in order. The administrator can edit a slide and swap text, audio, and video clips anytime. This empowerment allows the State of Vermont to edit the system independently as the policies and procedures evolve.
The start of the project consisted of developing the storyboard based on Vermont’s driver’s training manual. Our team decided it was best to create this project using 3D modeling and interactive mediums to appeal to the daily teenage audience immersed in the digital realm. The existing driver’s education manual was the foundation for an effective storyboard that met each learning objective.
