The Client
Lyft, Inc. is an American company offering mobility as a service, ride-hailing, vehicles for hire, motorized scooters, a bicycle-sharing system, rental cars, and food delivery in the United States and select cities in Canada.
Sneak Peak
The Challenge
Lyft faced a significant challenge in their onboarding process: the scenarios demonstrating poor driver and rider experiences were limited to text-based content. This method lacked engagement and failed to convey these experiences’ real-world implications effectively. Lyft needed a more dynamic and immersive training tool to offer a deeper understanding of expectations during a ride, instill confidence in new employees, and ensure that customers receive top-quality service by educating new hires on best practices and empathy for drivers and riders.
The solution
Designing Digitally proposed an innovative solution using WebXR technology. This immersive Driver training experience aimed to simulate real-life scenarios that Lyft drivers and customers face, providing new hires with a firsthand understanding of the impact of their actions on the brand and its bottom line. The training experience was designed to be accessible through web-based VR headsets, making it easy to integrate into Lyft’s existing Learning Management System (LMS).
The solution was built as a single WebXR output to HTML5, capable of auto-detecting the user’s device and delivering the immersive experience accordingly. Whether the new hires accessed the training via a standard web browser, a VR headset, or through augmented reality (AR), they received a consistent and engaging experience. This user-friendly flexibility ensured that all users could benefit from the immersive training regardless of their hardware.
The WebVR experience for corporate onboarding simulated the “Worst Ride Ever” scenarios in VR, allowing new hires to experience the most challenging situations a Lyft driver might face, from difficult passengers to navigating complex traffic conditions. The training covered a comprehensive range of situations, ensuring thorough and practical training.
Designing Digitally’s innovative use of WebXR technology was instrumental in transforming Lyft’s onboarding process, making it more engaging and effective. By immersing new hires in realistic scenarios, the training simulation helped Lyft ensure that employees are well-prepared to deliver exceptional service. The flexible, auto-detecting delivery system provided consistent training experiences across different devices, while detailed performance metrics allowed for targeted remedial training. This case study highlights how Designing Digitally leveraged advanced technologies, particularly WebXR, to meet Lyft’s training needs, providing a model for other organizations looking to enhance their onboarding processes. The use of WebXR technology not only made the training more engaging and practical but also demonstrated its potential to revolutionize training in other industries and contexts.
