Onboarding Your First Year at Community Transit Training Program
Training Method
The Client
Community Transit is the public transit authority of Snohomish County, Washington, United States, excluding the city of Everett, in the Seattle metropolitan area.
Sneak Peak
The Challenge
Community Transit approached Designing Digitally seeking an innovative solution to enhance their onboarding process. Their current two-day New Employee Orientation (NEO) fell short of meeting their evolving needs. They aimed to establish a comprehensive, year-long onboarding program, known as the First Year Experience, to integrate new hires into their mission-driven organization seamlessly. However, accommodating a diverse audience, including coach operators, maintenance professionals, and administrative staff, while addressing varying levels of technological familiarity and limited computer access posed a significant challenge.
The solution
Our team at Designing Digitally, Inc. worked on an innovative project to improve Community Transit’s onboarding process. We created the First Year Experience program, which was a combination of both digital and in-person learning activities. We analyzed the situation carefully and consulted with Samantha Thomson-Daly and Wendy Nelson, who were the project leaders. With their help, we designed a dynamic curriculum that effectively bridged departmental silos, provided insights into each role, aligned employees with the agency’s mission, and promoted an inclusive organizational culture.
The learning objectives of the program were tailored to address immediate training gaps and foster a sense of belonging among the employees. From understanding the agency’s collaborative structure to promoting diversity and disability awareness, our program aimed to exceed expectations. We used cutting-edge technology to ensure a multi-modal learning experience that catered to employees’ engagement and comfort levels, regardless of their technological proficiency.
The First Year Experience (FYE) program has emerged as a transformative initiative, providing new employees with an immersive learning experience. Our innovative approach has enabled better understanding across various departments, fostering a sense of togetherness and enhancing comprehension of the agency’s overall mission. By combining technology with in-person interactions, we have created a learning ecosystem that caters to diverse preferences and accessibility needs.
Our collaborative efforts have resulted in a significant shift in Community Transit’s organizational culture. New employees are now provided with comprehensive and supportive training that goes beyond their initial days. Together, we have reimagined the onboarding process, setting a new standard for holistic and impactful employee integration procedures.
